The department of Zoology established in 1964 became a U.G. department in 1968 with the introduction of B.Sc. Zoology.
Thereafter an Add-on course ‘Biopesticide Technology’ was introduced in the year 2004. Add-on-course ‘Sericulture’ was sanctioned by UGC in 2014.
The department has started research facilities in 2013 with the establishment of Arachnology Lab in 2013. Now department offers Ph.D course to four students under Mahatma Gandhi University.
During the last ten years (2010-20) the department has received research grants worth 55 lakhs under two major and two minor research projects.
An Add on Course on Wildlife and Photography is introduced in 2019 to the first semester students of other streams.
The Biodiversity Museum of the department is one of the best museums in the colleges of Kerala. More than 1000 specimens of animals are preserved in the museum.
The department was pioneered by eminent professors such as Prof. V.J.Mathew, Prof. K.J.Joseph Kodapally, Prof.Annie Paul, Prof. P.M.Jose, Prof.K.J.Joseph Kadiankutty, Prof. V.Kurian Issac and Prof. T.J.John.
Some of the notable Alumni of the department includes Dr.Philsamma Jose (Consultant Paediatrician at Brandford, Ontario Canada), Dr.Sunny Joseph (Cinematography award winner - Raj Kamal from President of India) and Rev. Dr.James Mathew Pampara CMI (Director, Institute of Oriental Canon Law, Dharmaram Vidhya Kshetram, Bangalore).
