The Department of Malayalam was started in 1964. The B.A. programme began in 1981 and the M. A. in 1999. The department rose to the status of a Research Centre in 2003. The Research Centre consists of 6 Research guides, 27 Research Scholars and eleven were awarded Ph. D. Seven minor research projects are credited to the department by U.G.C.
